DKos features petitions about all sort of matters. How about a petition to be delivered to the Democratic National Committee and to the Democratic parties in all states, DC and territories?
The resolution is simple: No more Presidential caucuses or conventions; primaries only.
Effective with the November 2024 US Presidential election, delegates to the Democratic Party National Convention to select candidates for President and Vice-President will be chosen solely by a primary election to be held in each state, DC or territory on the first Tuesday of March in Presidential election year. If a state, DC or territory selects their delegates by any means other than a primary election, those results will be rejected by the DNC.
Get rid of the un-democratic caucuses and conventions that are participated in only by those with the means and time to travel to the caucus/convention site, with accompanying travel, lodging, food, etc. expenses.
This proposal will dramatically increase participation in the Democratic Party Presidential and VP selection process. Thirty-nine states and DC have early voting ranging from seven to 45 days before Election Day; an average of 19 days of early voting. (Soon to be 40 states and DC as Virginia will establish 45 days of early voting effective Nov 2020.) Thus, Democratic voters will have ample opportunity to vote for party candidates, generally unconstrained by time, travel and expense — simply go to a local polling place and vote.
This proposal is far more democratic than caucus or convention. All registered Democratic voters will be able to participate in the process, not just those who can afford a few days off work.
This proposal will end the disproportional impact of small states that now tend to set the tone for the Democratic Party Presidential and VP nomination process. No longer will the small states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Caroline draw all the attention and set the tone for what is to follow.
Either we represent everyone or we are no better than the Republicans.
